Merchiston 1972


I was co-warden at the Merchiston overflow hostel in Edinburgh in 1972. Situated in Watson Crescent and known as the North Merchiston Club, it was, and still is, a sports club. In 1972 with Eglinton and Bruntsfield hostels always being full in the summer, it could take around 100 hostellers.



Stuart, the co-warden, and myself alternated mornings and evenings and had a day off each week. 

Before the hostel opened in the evening we'd occasionally play bowls in the adjacent public bowling green until the first hostellers showed up.





The hostel was a bit of a gloomy place


and the kitchen was small.

but luckily the weather was great and there were opportunities to sunbathe on the roof. Often some of the club officials family, who lived in an annex, would show up.
