CLEARING THE DRAINS
Like at many hostels, the sewage and drainage arrangements were designed for far fewer users than they had to cope with. So kitchen drains frequently blocked (lard was a popular choice for frying and it solidified in inconvenient places when poured down the sink) and toilets likewise, with an assortment of insoluble items ending up down the pan. Broadmeadows was no different.
