Locals

The local people were all very friendly, so some of them feature in the photos too.

Adjacent to the hostel grounds was a little cabin or hut which was used at weekends by a family from Innerleithen.


The couple were Alan and Dot Henderson




The Post office was in Yarrowford, a mile or so from the hostel. The postmistress was Margaret, and her and her neighbour's kids used to play in the front garden.





At the bottom of the footpath at the bridge over the river lived Mr Skeldon. I borrowed his scyth to cut the grass at the hostel. In return I cut his lawn.





One of the regular posties was Les Methven.



Les was known for his casual way with opening gates with the bumper of the van.

 I went back to the hostel a couple of years later and Sue was the warden:
